Tansi Nîtôtemtik,
We wish everyone a happy and healthy start to 2021.
To begin this semester, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who followed along in 2020. We appreciate all the feedback that we received and are grateful to have been recognized with a Canadian Law Blog Award, known as a Clawbie. We would also like to extend our congratulations to the Indigenous Law Centre of the University of Saskatchewan for the Clawbie that they received for their CaseWatch blog. The CaseWatch blog summarizes the most recent cases involving Indigenous issues from across the country. This was a valuable resource to our writing team over the fall, and will continue to be during 2021.
In our fall semester, we reviewed Calls to Action #1 through to #49. Our final report card can be found here. We have assigned an overall grade of D+ for the first 49 Calls. Our writing in the fall semester covered some larger and more expansive topics, each with several calls to action. This winter semester we will review Calls #50 through to #94. This includes many more topics, with relatively fewer calls to action within each topic. Calls #50 to #94 includes the following:
Equity for Aboriginal People in the Legal System (Calls 50 - 52)
The Implementation of a National Council for Reconciliation (Calls 53 - 56)
Professional Development and Training for Public Servants (Call 57)
Church Apologies and Reconciliation (Calls 58 - 61)
Education for reconciliation (Calls 62 - 65)
Youth Programs (Call 66)
Museums and Archives (Calls 67 -70)
Missing Children and Burial Information (Calls 71 - 76)
The Implementation of a National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (Calls 77 - 78)
Commemoration and Recognition (Calls 79 - 83)
Media and Reconciliation (Calls 84 - 86)
Sports and Reconciliation (Calls 87 - 91)
Business and Reconciliation (Call 92)
Newcomers to Canada (Calls 93 - 94)
This past October we attended and wrote about the Indigenous Bar Association Conference. We will do something similar this semester by reporting on the Indigenous Law Students’ Association speaker series. We will also continue to set aside time to give our perspective on ongoing issues and events.
We wish you all the best as you enter 2021. Thank you for your continued readership and support.
Until tomorrow,
Team ReconciliAction YEG
