Happy 2020 and welcome back to another semester of ReconciliAction YEG! We had a great first semester and are looking forward to further research and information sharing with our readers. We are also excited to announce that we are starting this semester with a new team member: Russell. Check out his introduction post this Friday.
We will start off this semester the same way we ended last semester: Child Welfare. Our team is particularly interested in this topic and we had more to say. Consequently, we decided to include an additional two weeks of content on child welfare.
We will continue to discuss child welfare over the next two weeks. We will begin the discussion by considering federal and provincial governmental responses to the child welfare issue. We will consider the federal government response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action for child welfare. We will then look at, Bill C-92, An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis Children, Youth and Families which came into force on January 1, 2020.[1] Our consideration of provincial responses will include Alberta’s Bill 22.
The second week of this topic will be focused on Indigenous Community responses the child welfare. This will include posts on community-based programs, reunification, a highlight on community-based groups, and resistance and Indigenous People’s Bodies.
Following the conclusion of our discussions on child welfare, we will begin a discussion of alternatives to the Indian Act.[2] We will discuss whether abolishing the Indian Act is a good thing and whether there are other alternatives that are better suited to modern day needs.
We are very much looking forward to another semester of learning!
Until next time,
Team ReconciliAction YEG
